Microgaming to explore Mobile-Only Casino Games in 2017?

2016 was a fantastic year for the mobile casino games industry. As usual, Microgaming made a huge splash at last year’s ICE Totally Gaming Expo, unveiling its futuristic VR Roulette. 2017 is sure to see another 12 months of industry innovation, and could even see gaming brands moving towards “mobile-only soft games”.

Lydia Barbara explains future of Mobile Casino Games That hint towards the impending future came from one of Microgaming’s top execs, Lydia Barbara. She’s been heading up the company’s Pegasus Gaming Solutions division on the Isle of Man since March 2014, and has a keen insight on where the digital gaming industry is going.

In a recent interview with SBC News, Ms. Barbara was asked to reflect on her experiences in 2016, and describe her vision for the new year at Microgaming. She felt that the most prolific development in mobile technology over the last 12 months was the global industry’s assimilation of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR).

Future of Mobile Casino Games

As for the future of mobile casino games, she was lucky enough to have access to a round table of the company’s brain stormers. Ms. Barbara was hand-picked to lead up an “internal challenge/innovation incubator at Microgaming” throughout 2016.

She told SBC News, “My favourite memory is announcing our winners at the company-wide Christmas party, and having everyone applaud these fantastic people whose brilliant ideas will be built and implemented in 2017.”

Based on that role, Lydia should know better than anyone just where the future of the digital gaming systems development brand is going. And while she wasn’t exactly asked what options Microgaming was exploring in the New Year – trade secrets aren’t meant to be revealed so easily – she did hint that desktop platforms may soon be a thing of the past.

Desktop Giving Way To Mobile-Only Casino Games?

Towards the end of the interview, Ms. Barbara was asked what she will be watching for most in 2017.

I’m intrigued by what’s going on in the world of mobile-only soft games. This is an area with huge potential, and I’m keen to see where companies take it.”

While she never mentioned Microgaming specifically as heading in that direction, it certainly raises questions as to whether mobile-only software could be right around the corner.

Statistics have shown that mobile casino games are finally set to outpace the desktop variety. Traditional online gambling isn’t expected to disappear anytime soon, but with AR and VR solutions becoming so prominent, technology is clearly favoring the mobile realm in terms of innovation.

The Microgaming exec was especially moved by those developments over the last year.

When asked to identify the most important development in the digital gambling industry, she said, “It’s difficult to pinpoint a specific development, but what I do get excited about is new technology. And this year I watched the developments in VR and AR very carefully. I think we’re still a way off in terms of these technologies becoming mainstream, but I believe we are a few steps closer.”

Ms. Barbara went on to applaud Microgaming’s unveiling of VR Roulette at ICE 2016, and the development team’s showcasing of “product innovations using the latest headsets and technologies that have the potential to impact not only on our industry, but our daily lives… I’m keen to see what they will be presenting at February’s show.”
